Mission Eleven Million and its role to change the Football landscape of India

Football is not new to us. It probably courses through the veins of a majority of the Eastern, North Eastern and Southern belts of our country. Also, having been an essential part of India’s sporting culture for about 100 years, the popularity of the beautiful game has proliferated into the 21st century through a vicarious but healthy fan base across the nation for several international leagues and teams. A clear proof of leading sport channels catering and altering their programming to service international game screenings, bringing down elite teams and athletes as well as setting up academies by corporates.

The relevance and importance of sport in a developing country like us is humungus. An important fact to note is that about 22% of India’s population is below the poverty line and children from this segment don’t have access to some of the basic necessities for growth and survival. Using sport and especially, an inclusive one, like football as catalyst to bridge this gap can is the calling of the hour.

A testament of what sport can do to empower the lesser endowed is through world class players like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo who have come from such backgrounds where they, as children, did not have the privileges that they enjoy today. Football was the sport that helped them overcome their hardships and paved the way for them to become the legends that they are today. And the spirit of creating heroes within you is something that is the need of the hour today for not just Urban but rural psyches also.

The answer to the above was given to the nation on the 6th December 2013 when India was officially declared as the host nation for the FIFA U-17 World Cup.

This announcement was a watershed moment in the history of development of football in our country. India had arrived finally at the international football scene and would be rubbing shoulders with the big players of the world. By hosting the most illustrious tournament for football at an international level, India has a big shoes to fill in, especially at nurturing talent at the grassroots.

As the opening game dawns closer, the Government of India has initiated multiple campaigns to bring the sport to every nook and corner of the country; one of them being the Mission XI Million program (MXIM). A collaboration between the Government of India and the All India Football Federation (AIFF), Mission XI Million envisions to introduce the world’s most popular sport to 11 million students, parents, coaches, and teachers through workshops, seminars, contact programs as well as competitions before the World Cup. This goal will be achieved by taking the game to 12,000 schools in 37 cities, to encourage and incentivize teachers to get children to play the sport on a regular basis.

Since the game can be played in different formats, MXIM will help stimulate the development of the small sided formats (4 vs 4, 5 vs 5) in schools which would help students gain confidence, learn how to play the game and absorb its core values. The words of Prime Minister Narendra Modi summarize an opportunity of this magnitude. He has termed this as a breakthrough in the revolution of sport in our country and expects the whole year to be an atmosphere of football in schools and colleges. Within a span of few months, this program has already touched 1 million children across the country.

Along with the federation and the government, several corporates have heavily invested in the development of talent. Corporates have  supported this cause and paved way for an opportunity by introducing and letting thousands of children in the country experience the sport.

India is a land of opportunities and the potential that our billion plus population is immense. When revolutions like MXIM kick in at the core of the country, wheels of change begin to churn fortunes. And once this wheel starts spinning it, there’s no stopping it.

More Trips Abroad with a Multi-Currency Forex Travel Card!

Thanks to technology and globalisation, travelling to distant lands for work as well as leisure is fairly easy in today’s times. With about 65 million passport holders in the country, India is pretty active on the international travel scene.

According to a survey, an average of INR 2,55,100 was spent during travels by Indians in 2015, only 40% of which was on business trips. With regards to holidays, Indians are opting for international travel destinations at a greater frequency. The destinations most preferred by Indian travellers include Dubai, Bangkok, Singapore, Paris, and London. As more and more Indians are travelling abroad for business and holidays, it is expected that the outbound tourism of the country will cross US$ 40 billion by 2020. Even for an estimate, this figure includes quite an increase in the spending behaviour of Indians when they travel abroad.

Handling Foreign Currencies While Travelling

Travelling abroad has always entailed with it the necessity of carrying sufficient amount of foreign currency. It required keeping a constant track of the fluctuating exchange rates and the depleting reserves of the cash-at-hand. You also had to ensure that you have sufficient cash on your person to avoid any problematic scenarios regarding foreign currency prior to the travel.

Such issues however are a thing of the past with the introduction of multi-currency forex cards. Functioning like any other plastic money, allowing one to make swift transactions on the go, they make managing multiple currencies during international travels exceedingly easier.

Unlike normal credit cards, there are no transaction fees involved. Additionally, a key benefit of purchasing a multi-currency forex card from IndusInd Bank is that there are no hassles of dealing with fluctuating currency rates. The rate of exchange remains fixed to what was applied on the day of purchasing the card.

The story behind India’s sporting history

There is a prominent narrative that we hear when we mention sport and India and it is that we as a country seem to lack a “sporting culture”. While we are all aware of the country’s rich cultural heritage, diversity and unique traditions, what is arcane to the masses is that sport has also been a major part of this illustrious history.

For any athlete to master a sport, physical perfection is of utmost importance as it allows the athlete to improve his or her performance. We see this trait in top athletes like Cristiano Ronaldo, LeBron James and Virat Kohli. The attainment of physical perfection was one endeavour that was very close to ancient Indians too. Dehvada or the “way of the body” was considered one of the ways to full realisation, and the development of the body was as important as spiritual growth.

The myth that India has no “sporting culture” cannot be further from the truth. In fact, our nation’s sporting culture was present even in Ancient India. Much like in Ancient Greece, many of the sports played in Ancient India were derived from actions one would conduct in war. The Indus Valley civilization (2500-1550 BC) played sport with weapons that were used in hunting and in war, like the bow and arrow, the toran (javelin) and the chakra (discus). This extended beyond just the physical. Games were created to inculcate a mindset for war strategy.

Chaturanga was played to create and master military strategy and it gave birth to what we fondly know today as Chess. While the original form of the game relied heavily on luck (as it was played with dice), it evolved into a synthesis of both strategy and good fortune. In the Mahabharata, we see a version of Chaturanga played with dice. The Manas Olhas (1135 AD) speaks about other sports that were present such as Bharashram (weightlifting), Bharamanshram (walking) and Mall-Stambha (a different type of wrestling). Swimming, sword fighting, wrestling and ball games were also popular among students in Nalanda and Taxila.

Martial arts is one form of sport that one associates with the Far East but what is not known by many is that its origins are Indian. Kalaripayattu, an ancient martial art form that originated from Kerala, draws a remarkable resemblance to Karate. This form was heavily used in training warriors in the Sangam era and is considered to be one of the oldest fighting systems in existence. It involves using knives and swords and was an equally powerful unarmed self-defence technique. With the advent of Buddhism, this art form spread across the Far East countries. Since monks never carried any weapons, as it was against their religious beliefs, they would often spread this art form along with the teachings of Buddha. The relationship between the student and teacher we see in Judo and Karate also resembles the perennial guru-shishya tradition.

Fast forward to the early 20th century, pre-independence era, India still had individuals accomplishing remarkable feats on the international stage with the likes of Dhyan Chand and Roop Singh gaining recognition in Hockey during the Olympics; Vijay Merchant in cricket; and Mohammed Salim in international football. Vijay was one of India’s best cricketers in the pre-independence era averaging a score of 71 every game, only second to Don Bradman. Mohammed Salim played for Celtic Football Club in Scotland and was the first Indian footballer to play in Europe. His mesmerising technique and ball control (even more impressive given his insistence on playing barefoot against booted opponents) resulted in much adoration from the Celtic fans.

To suggest that India does not have a sporting culture is incorrect. In recent times this culture might be dormant, but in no way is it non-existent. Throughout Indian history we see instances where sport was integral to society and played a critical role in shaping culture. Hence, it is our responsibility to reawaken and nurture what is deeply intrinsic to us Indians – Sport!

How to Prevent Credit Card Fraud

Credit Cards offer a host of unique features that help us fulfil our daily requirements. Is it any wonder that they have become immensely popular with us? This increased usage though has resulted in an increase in credit card frauds as well. Therefore, knowing how to prevent such frauds is crucial. We’ve drummed up a few tips that will help you become an alert customer…take a look:

Keep it safe:

It might sound obvious, but little steps do make a big difference. Make sure you keep your card safe and not hand it over to others for use.

Inform your card company immediately if you lose it:

On misplacing your card, immediately call up your issuer and ask them to block your card. This way, at least you won’t stress yourself about the card being misused by somebody else.

Be careful while shopping online:

Yes, one of the benefits of the card is that it lets you shop on the go and from anywhere in the world, but it doesn’t mean that you don’t follow certain precautionary steps. Since the CVV number can be misused, always check if the website is secure or not. Furthermore, If you see a yellow lock on the bottom right-hand corner of your screen, it means that the website is certified by VeriSign, hence, safe for transactions.

Dispose of your old card properly:

It’s important to completely destroy your old card when it’s no longer in use by cutting it up. By doing so, even if the card has expired, there will not be any risk to your account information whatsoever.

Be careful about new offers:

New offers often sound exciting, but could very well be a trap. Especially when you receive calls/e-mails from sources claiming to be your Bank, it’s better to verify the authenticity before signing up for any new scheme. You can call up your Credit Card company to find out how genuine a plan or offer is. It doesn’t hurt to be too careful, does it?

Change PIN regularly:

This holds true for almost everything that comes with a password. You must keep changing your ATM password/PIN from time to time for increased safety. Avoid obvious numbers, such as your birth date, anniversaries, etc. Also, do not share your PIN with anyone no matter how close.

Check your monthly Credit Statement:

If you are not receiving your monthly credit statement, then there’s a chance that your billing address has been changed by a fraudster. Inform your credit card company at the earliest to figure out if it’s miscommunication or a case of identity theft.

Use Chip-based Card:

A chip-based card offers you more security than the one with a black magnetic stripe. As the information is in an encrypted format inside the chip, it leaves little chance for a fraudster to change or copy the data.

Be vigilant while swiping:

While making payments at a store or a restaurant, ensure that your card is swiped in front of you. This way, you can be sure about your card not getting cloned by fraudsters.

With IndusInd Bank offering you a variety of Credit Cards, from lifestyle-specific ones to those with travelling benefits, it is essential that you use them with the utmost care.

We are sure that with these tips in mind, you’ll keep your card safe as well as take the right action in case of a misuse.

Importance of Credit Score and How to Maintain It

Whether it’s buying something as small as a smartphone or as big a commitment as a house, we always search for various credit options, such as Credit Card EMIs, Housing Loans, Personal Loans, and so on, to ease the pressure on our current financial position. While that is an intelligent decision, maintaining a good credit habit and a good credit score is important to avail these options.

What is a Credit Score?

Your credit score is a record of all the past Loans or Credit Cards associated with you, along with your repayment history. Basically, it’s a one-stop place to pull out everything related to your ability to repay a borrowed sum. This data is checked for regularity or irregularity and helps establish your financial behaviour and discipline. Your credit score, in turn, helps Banks in gauging your intent for repayment in the future.

Why is a Good Credit Score Important?

It’s essential as it’s a deciding factor in whether you’ll get approval for a Credit Card, Housing Loan, Car Loan, or any another type of Loan. Banks and lenders want to be paid back, and if your credit score indicates that you are an unreliable borrower, you will not be applicable for these sources of credit.

How to Maintain a Good Credit Score?

Well, by developing healthy financial habits, you can keep a good credit score. Always pay your dues on time and keep your balances low. Also, it’s better to boast a healthy mix of secured loans (Home Loan and Auto Loan) and unsecured loans (Personal Loan and Credit Cards) as too many unsecured loans may be viewed negatively.

Apply for new credit in moderation as you don’t want to seem credit-hungry. You should also monitor your Co-Signed, Guaranteed and Joint Accounts regularly as you are held equally responsible for your joint holder’s negligence regarding repayments.

Moreover, clearing off all your Credit Card dues is vital for a good credit score. Plan your spending in such a manner that you clear off your credit balances before the due date. Checking your credit reports regularly is also a good idea because it reflects two things critical to your credit score – the presence of any defaults or delayed payments and the information recorded in the credit report.

We are certain that with this informative guide, you’d be able to manage your finances properly and maintain a good credit score.

IndusInd Bank offers a broad range of Credit Cards, specifically suited to your needs that also help you keep track of your spending. Visit www.indusind.bank.in and apply for a Credit Card today!
