How to Unblock a Blocked Credit Card?
Updated on Wednesday, September 16th, 2026 | By IndusInd Bank
A blocked credit card can be frustrating, especially when a payment is declined without warning. A block does not always mean that your card account is closed. It can happen because of suspicious activity, missed payments, an exceeded credit limit, an expired card or a security-related issue.
The first step is to find out why the card was blocked. Once you know the reason, you can take the correct action instead of repeatedly trying the card and causing more declines.
What Does It Mean When Your Credit Card Is Blocked?
When a credit card is blocked, the bank stops new transactions from being approved on the card. You cannot use it for purchases, cash withdrawals or other card-based payments until the block is removed or the card is replaced.
A blocked card does not cancel your existing dues. You must continue paying the amount shown on your monthly statement by the due date. Any interest, late-payment charge or other applicable fee continues according to your card terms.
Temporary Block vs Permanent Block
A temporary block is usually placed for a security check, incorrect PIN attempts, missed payments or another issue that can be corrected. The bank can restore the card after verification or after you complete the required action.
A permanent block usually applies when the card is reported lost or stolen, has expired, has been replaced, or the bank has closed the card. In such cases, you need a replacement card instead of trying to unblock the old one. The bank can confirm whether the block is temporary or permanent.
Reasons Your Card May Be Blocked and How to Unblock It
Reason #1: Suspicious Activity
The bank monitors card transactions to protect you from fraud. A large purchase, an unusual online transaction, a transaction from another country or several unsuccessful attempts can trigger a security block.
If you recognise the transaction, contact the bank through its official customer-service channel and complete the required verification. If you do not recognise it, report it as unauthorised immediately. Do not confirm a fraudulent transaction just to get the card unblocked.
Reason #2: Missed Credit Card Payments
Missing the minimum amount due or paying after the due date can lead to restrictions on your card. Check your latest statement to see the overdue amount and any applicable charges.
Pay the outstanding amount through an authorised payment channel and contact the bank if the card remains blocked after the payment is credited. Set payment reminders or use an approved auto-debit facility to avoid missing future due dates.
Reason #3: Exceeding Your Credit Limit
Your card can be blocked when your outstanding balance reaches or crosses the assigned credit limit. Pending transactions can also reduce your available limit even before they appear as completed transactions.
Make a payment to bring the outstanding balance below the available limit. Check the card again after the payment is processed. If the card is still blocked, contact the bank for assistance.
Reason #4: Using an Expired Credit Card
Every credit card has an expiry date. Transactions made after that date can fail because the card is no longer valid.
Use the replacement card sent by the bank and activate it as instructed. Update the card details saved on shopping websites, subscription services and other payment platforms. Do not continue using the expired card.
Reason #5: Incorrect PIN Attempts
Entering the wrong PIN several times can result in a temporary security block. Stop trying different PIN combinations because further attempts can extend the restriction.
Use the official PIN reset or card-service option if it is available. You can also contact the bank through its verified customer-care channel to confirm the next step.
Reason #6: Incomplete KYC Details
A card can be restricted if the bank needs updated KYC information or if the details in its records are incomplete.
Follow the bank’s instructions to submit the required documents through an official website, app, branch or other authorised channel. The restriction is removed after the bank completes its verification.
How to Unblock Your Credit Card
The correct way to unblock your card depends on the reason for the restriction. Do not use links received from unknown callers or messages to submit documents or make payments.
Unblock a Card Blocked Due to Suspicious Activity
Call the official customer-care number shown on the bank’s website or card documents. Complete the identity check and confirm whether the recent transactions were made by you.
If the transaction is not yours, ask the bank to block the card permanently and issue a replacement. Review your statement and report every unauthorised transaction.
Unblock a Card Blocked Due to Missed Payments
Check the total overdue amount, including any charges shown on your statement, and make the payment through an authorised channel. Keep the payment reference for your records.
Contact the bank after making the payment and ask when the card will be available again. Paying the dues does not always remove the block immediately because the payment and account status need to be updated.
Unblock a Card Blocked Due to Credit Limit Exceedance
Pay enough of the outstanding balance to restore your available limit. Remember that pending transactions, instalments and other temporary blocks can also affect the amount available for use.
Once the payment is reflected, try the card again. Contact the bank if the card remains blocked or if you believe the available limit is incorrect.
Unblock Through Customer Care or a Branch Visit
Contact customer care when the reason is unclear, the card remains blocked after you have taken the required action, or the bank asks you to complete additional verification.
A branch visit can help when your KYC details need updating or the bank requires physical verification. Carry a valid identity document and the card details requested by the bank.
Never share your OTP, PIN, CVV, password or full card details with anyone who claims to be helping you unblock the card.
Keep Your Credit Card Safe and Usable
A card block is often a security or account-management measure, but it should not be ignored. Find out the reason, complete the required action and use only the bank’s official service channels.
Pay your bills on time, keep your contact and KYC details updated, monitor card alerts and report suspicious transactions quickly. If the card is lost, stolen or permanently blocked, request a replacement instead of trying to reactivate it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. Do I continue to earn reward points while my credit card is blocked?
You do not earn points on new purchases because a blocked card cannot be used for transactions. Reward points already earned generally remain subject to the card’s reward programme terms, unless the account is closed or the points expire.
Q2. Will my auto-debit and standing instructions fail if my card is blocked?
Card-based auto-debits and subscription payments can fail when the card is blocked. A standing instruction linked directly to your bank account is separate and normally continues, provided the account has enough balance.
Update your payment details after receiving a replacement card if the card number has changed.
Q3. Do I have to pay my outstanding dues while my credit card remains blocked?
Yes. Blocking the card stops new transactions but does not remove your existing balance. Pay the amount due by the date shown on your statement to avoid further interest or late-payment charges.
Q4. Will I be issued a new card number after my card is unblocked?
Not always. If the bank removes a temporary block, you usually continue using the same card. A replacement issued after loss, theft, expiry or permanent blocking generally has a new card number.
Q5. Can an add-on cardholder request to unblock the primary credit card?
The primary cardholder or authorised account holder normally needs to contact the bank for this request. An add-on cardholder can contact customer care for guidance, but the bank must complete its verification before making changes to the primary card.
