Can NRIs Open a Current Account in India? Eligibility, Benefits & Process

Posted on Thursday, December 28th, 2023 | By IndusInd Bank

NRIs can open a current account in India, but they must choose an NRE or NRO current account based on where their money comes from and how they plan to use it.

An NRE current account helps manage money transferred from overseas, while an NRO current account is meant for income received in India. Both accounts are maintained in Indian rupees and do not earn interest.

This guide explains the two account types, their benefits, documents, application process and important rules.

What is an NRI Current Account?

An NRI current account is a non-interest-bearing rupee account designed for Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs). It helps you carry out transactions and manage finances in India while living abroad.

NRIs, PIOs, and students studying abroad can open an NRI current account by choosing from one of the two options: NRE and NRO.

NRE Current Account

A Non-Resident External or NRE current account is used to transfer and manage overseas earnings in India. Funds held in an NRE current account are fully repatriable. This means you can transfer the account balance outside India through authorised banking channels.

An NRE current account is useful if you regularly send money to India for family expenses, property-related payments, EMIs or other financial commitments.

NRO Current Account

A Non-Resident Ordinary or NRO current account helps you manage income received in India. This includes rent, pension, sale proceeds etc. You can use the account for local payments, bill payments, EMIs and other India-based expenses. The funds are maintained in Indian rupees, and the account does not earn interest.

Current income can be sent abroad after completing the applicable tax formalities. Other eligible NRO balances can be repatriated up to USD 1 million in a financial year, subject to RBI rules, tax compliance and supporting documents.

Benefits of opening an NRI current account

1. Seamless remittances: An NRI current account gives you the freedom and convenience to manage your financial obligations by facilitating the hassle-free movement of money across international borders.

2. Financial management: The complexity of managing income generated across varying geographical boundaries necessitates a systematic approach to financial organisation. An NRI current account enables you to segregate income earned in India and abroad, thus fostering a clear and regulated structure for your financial records.

3. Investment opportunities: If you have an NRI current account, you can access a wide range of investment opportunities in the Indian financial landscape. You can utilise the funds held within this account to invest in diverse financial instruments, thereby expanding your investment portfolio and potential returns.

4. Joint accounts: As an NRI, you have the distinct privilege of opening joint accounts with both Indian citizens and other NRIs. This collaboration creates opportunities for joint financial efforts that serve varied financial needs and objectives.

Documents Required to Open an NRI Current Account

Keep the following documents ready when applying for an NRE or NRO current account:

  • Recent passport-size photograph
  • Copy of the passport pages containing your personal and passport details
  • PAN card or Form 60 if you do not have a PAN
  • Proof of NRI status, such as a valid resident permit, work permit or employment visa
  • Valid overseas or Indian address proof
  • Completed account-opening and KYC forms

For a joint account, the joint applicant must complete the required identity and KYC verification. The final document list depends on the applicant category and country of residence.

Steps to open an NRI current account online

1. Choose a bank: Research and choose a bank that offers NRI banking services and has a convenient online platform for current account opening. Engage in a thorough comparison of the services offered by different banks to identify the best bank for an NRI current account, as per your financial preferences.

2. Documentation: The foundation of any profitable financial endeavour lies in the completeness of documentation. Gather essential documents, including your passport, Visa, PAN card and overseas address proof, to ensure a smooth individual current account opening process.

3. Account type: It is important to make an informed decision on the type of NRI current account that aligns with your income sources. Evaluate the benefits of both NRE and NRO accounts in light of your financial aspirations.

4. Application: The subsequent step involves completing the application form provided by your chosen bank. You can use the bank’s online NRI account opening facility and fill out the application form along with the necessary documents.

5. KYC verification: Most banks require Know Your Customer (KYC) verification as a safeguarding measure. IndusInd Bank lets you conduct a video KYC procedure, ensuring the authenticity of your account application.

6. Fund transfer: Some banks might require you to maintain a minimum balance in your NRI current account. Fund your account using approved methods, which usually involve international wire transfers or other endorsed channels. This step solidifies the financial foundation of your NRI current account.

7. Account activation: With the completion of document verification and approval, your NRI current account will be officially activated, granting you access to an array of financial benefits it offers.

Regulations and restrictions for NRI current accounts

The management of NRI current accounts follows a set of regulations outlined by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). NRIs must adhere to these guidelines while navigating their financial affairs.

While NRE accounts offer the freedom of repatriation, NRO accounts come with certain restrictions on the movement of funds across international borders. Thus, a nuanced understanding of these regulations is essential to ensure compliant and strategic financial management.

How to Manage Your NRI Current Account

Once your account is active, a few simple practices can help you manage it smoothly:

  • Use the NRE account for overseas funds and the NRO account for income received in India.
  • Maintain the required average quarterly balance to avoid non-maintenance charges.
  • Check your transactions regularly through net banking or the mobile banking app.
  • Set up transaction alerts on your registered mobile number and email address.
  • Keep records of international transfers, tax payments and repatriation documents.
  • Use authorised banking channels for inward and outward remittances.
  • Update your passport, visa, address and NRI-status documents before they expire.
  • Appoint a joint holder or mandate holder if someone needs to manage payments in India on your behalf.
  • Never share your OTP, PIN, password or card details with anyone.

To Sum Up

An NRE current account is the right choice when you want to transfer overseas earnings to India and retain the freedom to send the money abroad. An NRO current account works better when you receive rent, pension, dividends or other income in India.

If you manage both overseas earnings and India-based income, you can hold both accounts and use each one for its intended purpose.
